SERVICE PROJECT

Denver Urban Gardens
(Lunch will be provided en route.)
Agenda & Speaker Bios [PDF]
For more than twenty years, Denver Urban Gardens (DUG) has worked to “grow” community – one urban garden at a time. DUG helps neighborhoods in-need create sustainable gardens, improve the health and food security of residents, and educate and empower participants to use gardening as a vehicle to build community. DUG also manages a community-supported agricultural project at its DeLaney Community Farm in Aurora. DeLaney participants pay or work as shareholders who "buy into" the fate of the farm each season. At DeLaney Farm, service project participants will assist farm staff and community shareholders with harvesting and preparing crops for the farmers market, planting a windbreak of native shrubs, and building picnic tables for use at DeLaney and other DUG gardens. Tools, gloves, and refreshments will be provided, and each activity will be supervised by DUG staff. Register now.

Education: Denver Public Schools
Agenda & Speaker Bios [PDF]
Handout
The Denver Public Schools district has been in local and national news for its sweeping reforms. Visit the Bruce Randolph School and meet administrators and funders behind the school’s significant changes. Three years ago, Bruce Randolph was the lowest performing middle school in the system and sanctioned by the Colorado Department of Education. Under the leadership of a new principal, its staff embarked on “Challenge 2010,” a restructuring process to turn the school around. Staff took an additional bold and controversial step this year with a sweeping proposal for autonomy – a factor they deem necessary to serve their students well. They have precipitated a movement for greater autonomy among Denver schools and inspired state legislation to encourage autonomy and innovation statewide. Register now.
