Money Matters

from Edwards Mother Earth Foundation, Seattle, Washington

Two years ago, the Edwards Mother Earth Foundation (EMEF), a Seattle-based ASF member, allotted a small amount of money for children and youth in the family to give to a nonprofit organization of their choice. Trustee Kendall Clark Baker writes to fellow EMEF board members:

“Nothing influences our lives more than money – making it, spending it, giving it, saving it. And yet most people seem to have difficulty talking about it.

Most of what we know about money we learned from our parents. Eight-five percent of it, one writer claims. I know personally that most of what I learned about money came from my father. Not only the practical stuff, like putting it in a safe place and developing a line of credit. But especially the intangible part – how it makes us feel about ourselves and our relationship with the world.

The EMEF program is an opportunity for you to talk with your children about money. It is a way to help them learn how to be a philanthropist – literally, a loving person. And to know that money matters.”
