Clearcut: The Story of Philomath, Oregon

Who makes the decisions after a founding donor is gone? Are the donor’s wishes being honored or are they so narrowly interpreted by trustees that they cause harm?

In the rural Oregon logging town of Philomath, every high school graduate has their college tuition paid thanks to the generosity of a late lumber baron. But when a new school superintendent arrives from Chicago, the administrators of the scholarship become concerned over the increasingly “liberal” direction of the schools.

The conflict between the old-time loggers and the “urban immigrants” escalates dramatically, leading to an ultimatum and the possibility that the town’s children won’t have money for college.

Also, join Grantmakers in Film + Electronic Media for a dine-around at 6:30pm to voice your opinion on the film, donor intent, and using media to move a mission.

Media Moving Missions ─ A Case Study: The Fledgling Fund

The Fledgling Fund seeks to improve the lives of vulnerable individuals, families and communities by supporting innovative media projects that target entrenched social problems. But is screening a film enough?

Sheila Leddy, Executive Director of ASF member The Fledgling Fund, will share how they shape their grantmaking, develop strategic partnerships, measure the effectiveness of their work, and insure their grants have impact.
