Grantmaking is commonly practiced and taught as a structured process. Written proposals--and the discussions that ensue around them--typically create a script that funder and applicant follow.

What if there was no script--that is, no formal written proposal? Or what if funders and applicants departed from the script into uncharted territory? What opportunities for impact open up when grantor and grantee meet, listen for ideas, and create opportunities together?

Consider what can happen by going beyond the script. ASF's research on leadership reveals that engaging closely with grantees and others who are knowledgeable empowers funders to identify important needs and develop solutions.

Join a conversation with ASF members and their grantees, who found great opportunities when they engaged directly -- and off-script. Hear about their goals, the risks they took and how that felt, and what supported their collaborative work.
