Tim Walter, CEO/Executive Director - In addition to his leadership roles, Tim speaks and writes frequently on foundation governance, leadership, and the state of the field. He joined ASF in 2001, following eight years with the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC, from where he traveled nationally and internationally as an award-winning expert on community and economic development for small towns and rural areas. His earlier career included positions with General Electric and in mergers and acquisitions for C. Itoh, a Japanese trading company. Tim holds degrees from Duke University and the Yale School of Management.

Kimberly Adkinson, Staff Editor - A member of the Print & Online Communications Team, Kim joined the ASF staff in July 2005 and works to maintain a consistent voice among ASF's print resources. She is also project manager for Essentials, the ASF quarterly newsletter. Prior to ASF, Kim was Member Services Director at the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers, Philanthropy Fellow at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and intern at the Baltimore Community Foundation. Kim has a B.A. from Cornell University, M.S. in Human Development from Penn State University, and MSW from the University of Maryland School of Social Work.

Sara Beggs, Senior Program Manager - Sara works in ASF's Member Services Team to develop materials, resources, and trainings such as The Foundation Guidebook, the Trustee Leadership Seminar, The Trustee Handbook, and other legal and board-related materials. She has held several positions with ASF, including Director of Meetings, Director of Development, and Director of Member Services. Prior to joining ASF in 2000, Sara managed the implementation of a comprehensive economic development plan, working closely with foundation, business, and community leaders. She brings 15 years of experience working in the nonprofit sector. Sara received a B.S. in economics from Boston College.

Bill Belding, Director of Corporate and International Programs - Bill is responsible for ASF's relationships with corporate partners and sponsors. He also works on investment curricula and is launching our international programs. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate Program of International Affairs at the New School in New York and American University in DC. Prior to joining ASF, Bill was President and CEO of Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, an international humanitarian organization that co-founded the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, the winner of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. He also served as Chief of Staff of Common Cause. Bill is an attorney and practiced real estate law in California before becoming fully engaged in the nonprofit world. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Yale and a JD from the University of California’s Hastings College of Law and served as a Navy SEAL in Vietnam.

Christa Carignan, Associate Web Editor - Christa joined ASF in February 2007. As part of ASF’s Print & Online Communications Team, Christa edits and organizes our online content and resource materials. She also oversees our e-newsletters. Christa has more than 10 years of experience as a writer and fundraiser for nonprofit organizations in the Washington, DC area, including National Council of La Raza, Island Press, and Cultural Tourism DC. In 2005, she chaired the membership committee for DC's Newark Street Community Garden Association. An avid gardener and photographer, her writing and photography have been published in Washington Gardener magazine. Christa graduated Magna Cum Laude from Elizabethtown College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology.

Andy Carroll, Senior Program Manager - Andy works in ASF's Member Services Team to research, write and edit resources such as Primers and Essentials articles, and to develop ASF's Professional Directory. He is the team lead on foundation grantmaking issues. Prior to joining ASF, Andy developed programs at the National Center for Family Philanthropy, and before that at the Council on Foundations, where he helped the Council's membership create the annual conference program. Andy has 20 years of experience in management, administration, training, and program development for nonprofit organizations, including work at the Nature Conservancy, Wolf Trap Foundation, and Public Citizen.

Justin Edwards, Publications Manager – Justin joined ASF in April 2008 to manage the production of the association’s printed publications and other materials. Prior to joining our Print & Online Communications Team, Justin coordinated the production of a large, clinical cancer research journal and supported the development of its graphic management. Justin graduated from the University of Iowa with Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Global Studies.

Karen Engstrom, Director of Membership Outreach – Karen is responsible for conveying the value of joining ASF to other foundations that are not currently members. Prior to joining ASF in 2007, Karen was the VP of Strategic Planning and Constituent Relationship Management for Special Olympics International where she defined and implemented strategies to improve fundraising and donor relationship management for the worldwide headquarters. Karen has also worked with several nonprofit and for profit organizations as a management consultant. She has a M.S. in Business Management from University of Maryland.

 

Jimmy M. Harris, Jr., Program Director- Jimmy joined the Educational Programs Team in March 2008. His responsibilities include managing ASF Local Programs and Signature Seminars. Previously, he worked at the Small Enterprise Education and Promotion (SEEP) Network, a membership association where he managed peer learning programs for international non-profit organizations working in microfinance and small business development; DAI, an international consulting firm; and the Inter-American Foundation, an independent foreign assistance agency of the United States government. Jimmy has a B.A. in French from Millsaps College and a M.A in Latin American Studies from Tulane University.

 

Virginia Humphrey, Special Projects Associate - Virginia joined ASF in October 2006. Her responsibilities include researching new projects and ideas, aiding with grant proposals, and assisting with material for the Board of Directors. After graduating from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, she joined the Peace Corps and served for three years as a Girls Education and Empowerment Volunteer in Togo, West Africa. After returning to the US, Virginia became a Political Analyst for the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.

 

Lauren Kotkin, Program Director – Lauren joined the Educational Programs team in March 2007. Previously, she worked at the Council on Foundations where she coordinated program content for the Family Foundation Conference in 2006 and then served as member services coordinator for family foundations. Before moving to DC in spring 2005, Lauren was the education director of a children’s museum in the Boston area, planning programs for educators, museum colleagues, children and families. She received an undergraduate degree from Duke University in cultural anthropology and a master’s degree in education from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, with a focus on using arts in education.

 

Hanh Le, Program Director – Hanh joined ASF in March 2008 and works to develop, plan, and execute educational programs for ASF members. Prior to ASF, Hanh directed training, grant, and technical assistance programs first for KaBOOM! and then for the Community Technology Centers’ Network – both national nonprofit organizations based in Washington, DC. Before moving to DC, Hanh served as a small business development volunteer for the Peace Corps in the Eastern Caribbean.  Hanh holds a B.S. in Environmental Geology from the College of William & Mary and a Master’s in Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia School of Architecture. 

Jeanette Lewis, Associate Director of Corporate Relations – Jeanette joined ASF in March of 2009. She manages corporate-sponsored ASF local programs and distance learning. She also develops investment curricula with the Director of Corporate Relations. Prior to joining ASF, Jeanette worked in numerous nonprofit organizations and local government agencies across the US. She holds a B.A. in Government from Smith College and a MA in Public Policy from the University of Pennsylvania.

Lennie Magida, Senior Manager, Development and Communications – Lennie came to ASF in February 2008 from Special Olympics International, where she was Senior Writer in the Development Department. In addition to wide-ranging journalism and communication experience in the U.S. and Asia, Lennie has an extensive background as a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor. A frequent actor and occasional director in D.C.-area community theatre productions, she is a board member of the Chevy Chase Players and of ArtStream, a local organization that provides artistic opportunities for people with disabilities and others traditionally underserved by the arts. Lennie holds degrees from Brandeis University and New York University School of Law.

Akilah Massey, Program Associate - Akilah offers logistical support to the Educational Programs Team as they coordinate seminars and conferences. She also works with ASF members and other partners on Lunch & Learns, small member-hosted gatherings around the country. After studying at Howard University in Washington, DC, she returned to her hometown of Cleveland, OH to work at a children's rehabilitation hospital for the Cleveland Clinic. She joined the staff ASF in October of 2005.

Ruth Masterson, Senior Program Manager - Ruth works in ASF’s Member Services Team to research and write member resources, develop trainings and provide member support, and she is the team lead for the Content Team. At ASF, she supports a member working group and writes and edits primarily on governance and board issues. She is a review panelist for the Maryland Association of Nonprofits’ Standards for Excellence certification program. Bringing 13 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, she has worked in management, administration and consulting with organizations including Silk, Adler & Colvin, the Council on Foundations, and the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law. She has also served on several boards of directors. Ruth earned her Masters in Public Policy at Johns Hopkins University with a focus in Nonprofit Management; a Certificate in International Development at SAIS; and a BA at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

Kathryn Petrillo-Smith, Managing Director - Kathryn oversees operations of ASF's Member Services Department. Immediately prior to joining ASF in 2004, Kathryn completed her M.B.A. studies at the Yale School of Management with a dual focus in strategy and nonprofit management. Before returning to graduate school, Kathryn worked as an economic and policy analyst at the Environmental Protection Agency for three and a half years helping to implement environmental control programs that relied on market based mechanisms. Kathryn was also a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bulgaria and holds a B.S. in environmental engineering from Cornell University.

 

Alana Placzkowski, Online Content Manager - Alana is an "accidental techie" working on the Print & Online Communications Team to organize and develop online materials. She also manages the Colleague to Colleague and Fields of Interest Guides, the two ASF member directories. She joined our staff in March 2005 as a receptionist, and still enjoys fielding member Q&A calls regularly. Before moving to DC, Alana worked as a massage therapist in Bloomington, Indiana. Prior to that, she taught English and drama in a Hungarian high school, where her students received several national achievement awards. Alana graduated with high honors from the University of Illinois with a degree in English education.

Janice Simsohn Shaw, Senior Program Manager - Janice oversees ASF’s Next Generation work, as well as writing for Essentials, the ASF Primer Series, and other case studies and resources. She also edits ASF’s Tear Sheets, pithy white papers on a range of topics. Janice joined our staff in January 2005 after relocating from Madison, WI. She brings 10 years of experience in the non-profit sector, and has coordinated Earth Day events at the United Nations as well as served as the sole staffer for a cross-country charity bicycle ride. Janice received her B.A. from Skidmore College and teaches yoga in her spare time.

Peter Tajat, Office Manager - While pursuing a bachelors degree in Management, Peter worked full-time for Slovak National Gas Company as an Assistant Property Manager at the Department of Internal Services. In 2001 Peter moved to the USA. After completion of 2 years of ESL classes at Insignia and NOVA, he returned home to finish his MBA in Management at Comenius University in Slovakia. After graduation, Peter received an internship at a US-based company, where he managed students and temporary laborers from Europe. Prior to joining ASF in June 2007, he worked for Sunrise Senior Living in McLean as a temporary Office Manager.

Carmen Wong, Senior Program Manager - Carmen is responsible for ASF's research, including the annual Foundation Operations and Management Survey. She recruits and supports informal member working groups on both administration and investment issues and provides subject-matter guidance, writing and editing on those topics. She is also a review panelist for the Maryland Association of Nonprofits’ Standards for Excellence certification program. Prior to joining ASF in 2001, Carmen worked for the Associated Press. She has a graduate degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, is a Fulbright Scholar and graduated Summa Cum Laude from The Catholic University of America.

Tammy Yeldell Receptionist - Tamara (Tammy) joined ASF in December 2008. In addition to providing receptionist services, Tamara supports our office and building management, and process all publication orders. She is a native Washingtonian who returned to the workforce after raising two sons. Upon graduating from the Community Business Center, she joined American Bankers Association as an Administrative Assistant; she worked her way to Publication Manager in the Communication Department before leaving in 2005. Tamara has also started an at-home business, taken marketing courses at Strayer University and has held various administrative positions.

Linda Zimmerman, Membership Manager - Linda is responsible for the day-to-day processing of all new and renewal memberships and maintaining ASF's member database. Prior to joining ASF in 1997, Linda worked for Population Communications International as an executive assistant/membership specialist. She also held management positions at the University of Vermont and New York Life Insurance Company, where she worked for 16 years before relocating to Vermont. Linda is a graduate of Hofstra University with a B.A. in English and has completed course work toward an M.A. in English at the University of Vermont.
