SPEAKER BIOS

Sara Beggs
moderator, and Roles, Responsibilities, & Qualities of an Effective Trustee
Sara Beggs works in ASF’s Member Services Team to develop materials, resources, and trainings such as the New Foundation Guidebook, the Trustee Leadership Seminar and Handbook, and other legal and board-related materials. She has held several positions with ASF including Director of Meetings, Director of Development, and Director of Member Services. Prior to joining ASF in 2000, Sara managed the implementation of a comprehensive economic development plan, working closely with foundation, business, and community leaders. She brings 15 years of experience working in the nonprofit sector. Sara received a B.S. in economics from Boston College.

Charles J. Fleming, Trustees in Action: Reflections from the Field
Charles J. Fleming is a former member of the Board of the Association of Small Foundations. A graduate of the University of Missouri he also attended the Tulane University Graduate School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine studying drug abuse and addiction. After selling his boat sales and service company in 1983, Charles is now self-employed managing various closely held family real estate and investment interests. He is active in the local community having served two terms on the local Board of Education including three years as President and held several District and State positions with the Missouri School Boards Association. He is a member of the Executive Board of the Great Rivers Council, Boy Scouts of America, and has served on the County Board of Health and been President of his Country Club’s Board of Directors. He is a Director of the Aunt Kate Foundation (formerly the Charles and Jennifer Fleming Charitable Foundation), a family foundation that provides grants in the areas of education, Boy Scouting and social services in the central Missouri area.

Laurna Godwin, Trustees in Action: Reflections from the Field.
Laurna Godwin is a three-time Emmy award winning broadcast journalist who spent more than twenty years in television as a news anchor, reporter, talk show host and producer. Prior to co-creating Vector Communications, Laurna was the sole owner of Godwin Communications, a media relations and video production company. Laurna is an active volunteer in the St. Louis region. Currently, she is Chairman of the Board of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, one of the largest councils in the country serving 63,000 girls with 17,000 volunteers. Laurna also serves on the boards of the Greater St. Louis Community Foundation, the Regional Chamber and Growth Association and Women of Achievement. Laurna is a former trustee of the Whitaker Foundation and former Chairman of the Board of Blackburn College. Laurna received her undergraduate degree in English Literature and American Studies from Princeton University and her masters in journalism from Columbia University in New York City.

Ben Marks, Investment & Fiduciary Responsibilites
Ben Marks began his career in 1982 at EF Hutton. In 1999 he joined PaineWebber, which was later acquired by UBS Financial Services. He has been a member of the UBS Chairman's Council since 2000, and is currently among the top 50 most productive advisors for UBS in the country. In 2005 Ben completed an extensive accreditation process to become a Private Wealth Advisor within UBS. This title designates the highest level of competence to advise wealthy families regarding their investments, estates and philanthropic planning. Ben's team, "The Marks Group", advises approximately 200 high net-worth families. Their most recognized portfolio is referred to as the "Marks Group Model" for which Ben is the senior Portfolio Manager within the UBS Portfolio Management Program. Ben was recently named the number 2 Top Wealth Advisor in Minnesota in a survey published by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. He is a frequent speaker to the members of the Association of Small Foundations, the Minnesota Council on Foundations and other philanthropic-related organizations.

Lisa McLaughlin, Governance & the Law
Lisa McLaughlin is an attorney at the firm of Polsinelli Shalton Flanigan Suelthaus PC. She has 25 years of experience and breadth of knowledge in the estate planning field, employing the full range of sophisticated planning techniques to customize estate plans for clients. Lisa also advises clients and tax-exempt entities with respect to creation, administration and governance of charitable trusts, private foundations and other nonprofit entities as well as individual gifting to such entities and establishment of planned giving programs. Lisa is a frequent lecturer on nonprofit law and fiduciary liability for Missouri Bar, Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, St. Louis Estate Planning Council, many local bank and trust departments and community groups.

The hotel is an easy trip from the St. Louis Lambert Airport. Grab a cab or take MetroLink to the 8th & Pine stop to get to the hotel.

Dine-Around
Arriving a day early to St. Louis? Then please join us for dinner on the evening of Wednesday, May 21st! ASF Member Christy Gray of the Mr. and Mrs. Lyndon C. Whitaker Charitable Foundation in St. Louis will lead us a few blocks from the hotel to a great local restaurant. ATTENDEE GUIDELINES
This program is open to trustees and staff of grantmaking foundations. If you are not a member of ASF or Gateway Center for Giving, and would like to attend the program, please first call ASF to confirm eligibility.

All ASF programs are a non-solicitation environment.


Each seminar or other event sponsored by ASF is open exclusively to foundation trustees and staff in good standing with ASF, and the attendance of all other parties shall be within the sole discretion of ASF. Attendance at ASF seminars or events is not automatic and/or guaranteed until ASF confirms a member's good standing and thereafter confirms its or their right to attend in writing.
